In the 60s and 70s, Bath County was the jewel of deer hunting in Virginia. Outdoor Life published a feature on the county's big bucks. Hunters came from miles around, Ohio, West Virginia, Tidewater Virginia and especially the coal mining country of far Southwest Virginia. The miners filled campgrounds, bringing their flop-eared coon hounds, their grandmas, and their kids, who often went barefooted on warm days. The population of Bath County tripled during gun season and cash registers rang. People came, because the country was thick with bucks and there were plenty of places to hunt them without running into a posted sign.
