| A recent decline in the population of ring-necked pheasants in South Dakota prompted the Governor's 2013 Habitat Summit. I was in South Dakota for a pheasant hunt this week and made the trek to the Habitat Summit today in Huron. More than 500 people registered for the event. Close to that many braved the -18 degree Fahrenheit temperatures and filled the basketball arena at Crossroads Convention Center/Huron Events Center. Gov. Dennis Daugaard called the event out of concern for the state bird. A brood count this year estimated pheasant numbers dropped 64% from last year.
