After two decades of decline, hunting and fishing participation among Americans increased between 2006 and 2011. Fishing was up 11 percent; hunting 9 percent, according to Responsive Management, a Harrisonburg firm that specializes in research on natural resources and outdoor recreation issues. Factors for the increases include marketing efforts by game and fish departments that have resulted in the recruitment of new participants and the retention of old ones.
