Most years, few people other than hunters take an interest in acorn production. Not this year. The scarcity of acorns has been front-page news and the subject of TV news features. The Roanoke Times carried a front-page story on the issue Thursday. Never mind the newspaper's outdoor columnist, Mark Taylor, has been writing back-page articles on the subject for weeks. "It seems like the media and most hunters are extremely interested in this year's acorns failure," said Gary Norman, a biologist of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. People are coming close to calling the drought of acorns a wildlife famine. If we get a harsh winter, a lot of animals aren't going to make it....
